Verbicovisual expression finds many forms in the history of literacy. Here, we will consider the delightful and semantically rich category of letters as figures, looking at examples from various cultural and linguistic contexts.
🖥️ Activity
- In the Materials section below is a Mixtape teaching collection with a few selected items of verbicovisual interest. We will explore materials and post image details for sharing and commentary.
- In the Tools section below that is an embedded detail tagging tool that graduate students at Princeton University are using to isolate Ethiopic characters from various manuscripts and print publications for comparative study and language learning. We will look at the tool, but not use it ourselves in this activity.
