IIIF for Educators

Tools for working with IIIF

Storytelling & Digital Narratives

Cogapp’s Exhibit

Exhibit (from University of St Andrews): A highly accessible tool that allows users to create interactive presentations. Students can zoom into specific details of a IIIF manifest and add descriptive text. It’s excellent for "close reading" assignments.

Storiiies

Storiiies (by Cogapp): A simple editor for creating annotated tours. It’s very intuitive for students who might not have deep technical backgrounds but want to showcase research on specific image regions.

Annona

A set of web components that can create "storyboards" or "carousels" from IIIF annotations. It’s a great way to turn a list of student-made annotations into a cohesive visual essay.

Collaborative Annotation & Transcription

Liiive

An open-source, web-based tool designed specifically for real-time, collaborative exploration and annotation of IIIF images. Liiive allows you to create shared, in-person annotation assignments.

Recogito (Pelagios Network)

While transitioning through various versions, Recogito remains a powerhouse for semantic annotation. Students can tag places (linking to gazetteers), people, or events directly on the image.

FromThePage

If your assignment involves transcription, this tool uses IIIF to serve images to students while they type out the text. It’s perfect for a "crowdsourced" class project to transcribe a specific historical ledger or letter.

IIIF Curation Platform

A suite of tools from Japan (CODH) that allows for "image cropping" and "curating" specific parts of various manifests into a new, personal collection.

CroppingTool

A freely available tool for cropping details from IIIF images. Croped details can be copied and pasted into disuccion boards or other communication tools.

Visual Analysis

Mirador

A powerful, customizable viewer ideal for side-by-side comparisons and deep zooming.

Universal Viewer

Simple, clean interface for viewing single or multiple resources.

Tify

A slim, fast viewer that is excellent for looking at large collections or multi-page documents (like digitized books) where the user needs to quickly jump between pages.
