We will explore this remarkable resource, and learn some of its sophisticated features for scholarly use. This Canvas discussion-based lab activity will support our active engagement with embedded tools and instructions.

🪜 Steps

Part 1: Solve the tile puzzle above 
  1. Look closely at image details in discrete tiles to see what they depict, and how they align
  2. Click any tile to move it to the one empty space
  3. Review and reflect upon the full image when you've completed the puzzle
Part 2: View and crop imagery in Mixtape
  1. Highlight any item in Mixtape
  2. Select the Cropping icon crop icon
  3. Click any page thumbnail to load in the IIIF Cropping Tool viewer
  4. Zoom and view
  5. To crop an image or other detail from the page, click the white pencil icon, and highlight the desired rectangle by clicking and dragging a rectangle from corner to corner
  6. A thumbnail of your selected detail will appear in a slider at the bottom of the Cropping Tool. You can repeat to collect multiple details.
  7. Click to highlight the detail thumbnail you would like to use
  8. Copy the detail URL displayed in the box above on the upper left (make sure it copies)
Part 3: Create and share your own IIIF puzzle 
  1. Open the Tile Puzzle Tool
  2. Paste your detail URL from the Cropping Tool into the box that says "Enter a IIIF image URL" and click Go
  3. Check and choose settings for number of tiles and size, and click Go again
  4. Click on the puzzle link
  5. Click Reply in the discussion forum below and follow the directions in the Share Section

Select one image or image detail that you want to share with the class as a puzzle. Submit a reply to this discussion forum that includes a brief comment or "teaser" about the puzzle.

  1. Review the posts by your peers, and try "solving" a few
  2. Submit a reply to at least one of your peers' puzzles and posts with a reflection of your own, addressing what you discovered in it, by looking closely
