The Object of Inquiry

Photograph of 19th Century writer John Godfrey SaxedetailJohn Godfrey Saxe (1816-1887) is best known for his 1872 poetic rendition of the Indian parable "The Blind Men and the Elephant." The gist of it is that unseeing individuals groping the same animal might come away with very different understandings of what it is, depending upon which part they grabbed: trunk, side, ear, tusk, tail, or knee (snake, wall, fan, spear, rope, tree, respectively). Here we will grapple with an online resource from the same period, Barnum and Jumbo's ABC, provided in IIIF as an object of inquiry.
