The term "digital divide" refers to technology access, but it could also apply to a rift that has arisen between tangible object reality, and digitized virtuality. For the duration of this course, we will grapple with a tangible "resource" that is bound in three parts, held in the Laurentian Library (Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana or BML) in Florence, and made available for online investigation by the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. It is part encyclopedia, part chronicle, part Nahua, part Spanish, and it is richly illustrated with a "third narrative" of images. Crucially, it is real. The digitized facsimile is also real, but it manifests in different ways, and should be approached with comparable intellectual rigor and scholarly technique in handling as an object of inquiry.
